Cyril studied at
Southend College of Art over thirty years ago but other commitments meant a career as an
apprentice boat builder and latterly a building surveyor. Moving to Cornwall in 1994
he started to paint again and exhibitions of his work began in 2000.
His current work grew
out of a fascination with the height of harbour walls viewed from a ‘low tide’
perspective, and with the buildings which are built on the piers and quays which led to
his distinctive style. While most of Cyril's paintings feature coastal scenes
particularly from the south-west he also regularly paints Venetian scenes and also circus
and fairs. The Venetian scenes are in black frames with a small gold slip, the
others are white.
His entry in the Royal
West of England Academy Autumn 2007 exhibition won the “Viewers’ Choice”
Award, he has also been accepted in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions on
numerous occasions.
